Chapter Twelve

Sophie was relieved Xanthus didn’t insist on following her into the police station—

not that it mattered. As soon as she stepped into the homicide bullpen, her cousin Storm said, “I take the day off and you hook up with the one person I’ve been telling you to watch out for.”

They hugged though Sophie felt a small knot of worry form. Storm might not have started out wanting to be a homicide cop, but Sophie knew her cousin was hooked on the job and really liked Brady Sinclair, the partner she’d drawn. “Is my being with Severn going to be a problem for you?”

Storm shrugged. “Eventually some bored newspaper person will catch on and parade a conspiracy theory out.”

Sophie grimaced as she thought of the reporters who’d seen her at the VanDenbergh estate with Severn. “You might want to warn your captain.” She started to tell Storm about being at the auction but stopped when she remembered the figurine surprise Storm’s husbands were planning for her.

“I’ll tell him,” Storm said. She gave Sophie another quick hug. “It is what it is. Severn

’s not going to give you up. And I suspect you’re not going to give him up.

Congratulations.”

“Thanks. It’s going to turn out okay, I think. It’s just complicated.”

“You don’t know the half of it yet.”

Sophie caught the laughter dancing in Storm’s eye. It was the same amusement she’d seen in Aislinn’s. She guessed Storm was alluding to what the future held for a woman who ended up with a sexually dominant man in her life. Trace made no secret about the fact Aislinn was his and he was alpha. Storm’s guys were subtler, but Pierce, who ironically enough—or not—co-owned Drake’s Lair with Severn’s cousin, was like a fire out of control when he was with Storm.

Heat pooled in Sophie’s belly. She bit her lip to keep from opening her mouth and confessing what she already did know about dominant men. She felt like a hormonal time bomb. She could almost hear the clock ticking down as the need for physical contact with Severn ratcheted up.

Not for the first time—and she ruefully admitted to herself, it probably wouldn’t be the last—she forced her thoughts away from Severn and onto the matter that had brought her to the police station to begin with, the Dragon’s Cup. “I have this idea that won’t go away,” Sophie said as she snagged a chair from a vacant workstation and positioned it next to Storm’s desk.

Storm laughed. “A hunch?”

“Could be writer’s imagination.” Sophie glanced at the empty chair across from where Storm sat. Like a lot of the partnered detectives in the homicide bullpen, Storm and Brady had pushed their desks back to back. “Where’s Brady?”

“Taking another vacation day.” Storm’s voice oozed satisfaction. “The maiden voyage on the boat went so well yesterday that Pierce lent the Treasure Hunter to Brady so he and Ilsa could do some deep sea fishing today.” Storm’s eyebrows went up and down. “Not that I want to envision Brady actually doing the deed, but I’m hoping some of the action takes place below decks.
